US Customs and Border Protection tightening enforcement
US Customs and Border Protection has been tightening enforcement since the White House issued the Strengthening Customs Enforcement executive order in June. CBP is now proposing to reach further back into the supply chain. An Advanced Notice of Rule Making was published in the Federal Register in early September. The proposed rule, titled Heightened Import Disclosures for Supply Chain Visibility, speaks about getting the official export declarations from foreign customs authority, invoices that match the export declarations, and so forth. CBP is accepting public comments until December 1, 2026. Importers need to consider if their suppliers would supply the official export declarations. This is likely going to be a challenge for many importers.
